John K. Harrigan, longtime Water Commissioner and Treasurer of the Lynnfield Water District, passed away on July 3, 2024. He left behind a legacy of tireless dedication and invaluable contributions to the District’s mission of efficiently and reliably delivering high quality water to its customers.
John was elected Water Commissioner in 1994, and Treasurer in 2004. His professional and educational background and experience, knowledge and commitment supported District decision-making. He was critical in moving the District from manual water meter reading collection to radio frequency drive-by technology in 1995. John was involved in the planning of many consequential projects, including: the installation and replacement of pumping and related distribution system equipment; the construction and replacement of aging water mains; the extension and connection of a 24-inch MWRA supply main from Saugus to the pumping station; and most recently, the rehabilitation of the District’s two water storage tanks.
As Treasurer, John managed the District’s finances. Responsible for the deposit, investment and disbursement of municipal funds, he worked closely and collaborated with the District’s accountant, auditor, and Office Administrator. He managed banking services, financial reporting, debt issuance and reporting compliance consistent with state regulatory requirements. His most recent project was the development and documentation of an investment policy.
“John cared deeply for the folks at the LWD and for the well-being of the families the District served. He wanted nothing but the best for the individuals that he worked with and for,” stated Judy Harrigan, his wife.
John’s longevity with the District was only a fraction of his deep commitment and service to the community. His dedication and contributions will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.
